This winter here in Wisconsin has been sticking around longer than we’d like it to. Needless to say, I have the travel bug- bad! Two winters ago I had the opportunity to return to the beautiful, historic city of Charleston, SC, a place that captivated me as a child, and once again stole my heart as an adult. But not just any adult- a photographer adult, one whose job and secret obsession it is to find and capture enchanting light! Well, Charleston is full of this magical light, and I was in heaven with my Canon 5D II camera & 24-105mm lens, and plenty of freedom to explore. Things I love about Charleston in addition to the fabulous light: the colorful buildings, the architecture, palm trees, hidden alleyways, old, old, old mansions, churches, and inns, cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, the history, the stories, the incredibly kind people, Southern hospitality, the historical Marketplace, the warm sea breeze, the fact that every meal I had was scrumptious, authentic Jambalaya, fresh oyster sliders, sea salt & milk chocolate, Wet Willy’s margarita bar with 40 different flavors, antique shops, boutique shops, and the sights along Battery Park, King Street, and Church Street. My wide-eyed enthusiasm and gigantic-by-most-people’s-standards camera equipment was all some curious, friendly locals needed to spark up conversation with me (Southern hospitality is real!). Upon hearing that I was a wedding photographer from Wisconsin, every response I got was along the lines of, “You must move here to Charleston, we have beautiful weddings!!” Perhaps it is for this reason I have not been able to shake the dream of revisiting Charleston on wedding business ever since. In the meantime, revisiting some old photos and memories of warmth, ocean, sunshine, and shopping will have to do!
